Wynona Moore Lipman was born in Georgia, moving to Montclair after she married. It was here, as VP of Democrats for Good Government, she got her start in politics. In 1971, she ran for the NJ State Senate on a platform of social justice, becoming the first Black woman to win a seat. She soon discovered there weren’t even restrooms for women in government buildings! Ms. Lipman served nine consecutive terms, championing programs and legislation for under-represented business owners, domestic violence victims, abused and neglected children, and people with AIDS. In all, she secured passage of 145 bills, a remarkable achievement. Hats off to Wynona Moore Lipman.
