History at Home: Alice Hooe Foster and the Shaping of Montclair’s African American Middle Class

Virtual Event

Montclair resident Betty Holloway shares an intimate and intriguing portrait of Alice Hooe Foster and her remarkable African American family in the Township of Montclair, circa 1874 to 1940. The Hooe family and their contributions as business leaders laid the framework for what was to become Montclair’s middle class that actively engaged in uplifting the culture and life of the community.  Foster, the first African American woman to graduate from Montclair High School, also contributed greatly to Montclair’s social justice initiatives in the early 20th century, including the founding of a YWCA for African American women and girls. Betty Holloway is a Montclair resident, former teacher, educational consultant, and historian.

This program shows at 12pm and 7pm.
