History at Home At Night: Modern Houses in and Around Montclair

  • Montclair History Center 108 Orange Road Montclair, NJ, 07042 United States (map)

VIRTUAL PROGRAM

Sure Montclair has some great old homes, but let’s also give some love to those modern houses, many of which (especially those on Highland Avenue) are designed to take advantage of that incredible NYC skyline view. In this History at Home, architecture historian Dr. Kazys Varnelis will discuss some iconic modern houses in our area, their architects, designs, construction, and philosophy. His talk highlights homes in Montclair, but also includes the surrounding communities.

Kazys Varnelis taught history of architecture at the university level for twenty years, and moved to Montclair to teach at Columbia University for ten years and has published numerous books and articles on the topic. Now retired from teaching, he is an artist exploring the intersections of new technologies and art as well as photography and has shown his work at places like the New Museum, Museum of Modern Art, and Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius, Lithuania. He lives in a modern "Deck House" (he’ll talk about them, too!) on Highland Avenue with his family and continues to write about architecture.

This is a FREE Zoom presentation.
