From 1920 to 1965, the house built by Israel Crane was the home to the YWCA for African American women and girls. Jane Eliasof, MHC’s Executive Director, tells the story of how the YWCA was formed and the unique role it played for the women and girls who were part of it.

Throwback Thursdays take place on the first Thursday of the month. Each month, the Montclair History Center will explore a different history topic -- people, architecture, artifacts, and more. Throwback Thursdays take place in the Founders’ Room of the Crane House and Historic YWCA.
