The Montclair History Center, in collaboration with St. Mark's United Methodist Church, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, the Amistad Commission, and Watchung Booksellers, is cosponsoring a free pre-premiere screening of the HBO films, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, on Thursday, April 20 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 73 S. Fullerton Avenue, Montclair. Registration is required.
Oprah Winfrey and Rose Byrne star in this adaptation of Rebecca Skloot's critically-acclaimed book, based on the true story of Henrietta Lacks. The film chronicles the search of Henrietta Lacks' daughter, Deborah, who along with journalist Rebecca Skloot (Byrne) learn how the unauthorized harvesting of Henrietta Lack's cancerous cells in 1951 led to unprecedented breakthroughs and changed the face of medicine. The book will be available to purchase on Thursday through Watchung Booksellers.
Plan to arrive for sign-in and a reception at 6:30 pm. The film begins at 7:30 pm, after which there will be a discussion period immediately following. Please register at the Amistad Commission website.
