Biographical Information on Albert Payson Terhune
Albert Payson Terhune was born December 21, 1872 in Newark, New Jersey. He was the son of Mary Virginia Hawes and Reverent Edward Payson Terhune. Mary, under the name “Marion Harland,” wrote household management books and novels before the Civil War. Albert was a reporter for The Evening World (New York City) from 1894-1916. At Sunnybank, Albert bred and raised rough collies. These dogs would eventually become the inspiration for many of his books. Albert’s first wife, Lorraine Bryson Terhune, died four days after giving birth to their daughter, Lorraine Virginia Terhune Stevens (1898–1956) and nine months into the marriage. He later married Anice Terhune with whom he had no children. In 1942, Albert passed away in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey.
The family’s summer home, Sunnybank, eventually became the permanent home of Albert in 1912. Today, Sunnybank is now the Terhune Memorial Park.
