Currently, the first floor, lower level exhibit space, and exterior hearth kitchen of the Crane House & Historic YWCA are accessible by ramp or elevator. The second floor bedroom spaces of the house are only accessible by staircase. High quality photos of the spaces are available for visitors who would like to see what the bedrooms look like. Service animals are welcome.

Our parking lot is located within 30 feet of the entrance to the Crane House & Historic YWCA. When visiting, please be aware that our parking lot is made of gravel and the walkways leading to the ramp and elevator of the house are made of brick.

A bathroom facility located in the lower level of the Crane House & Historic YWCA is wheelchair accessible. The lower level can be accessed using an elevator.

Transcripts are available for each of our tours of the Crane House & Historic YWCA.

Online

We have also made several pieces of our collection available online for viewing. Historic maps, city directories, photographs, postcards, and articles about Montclair history have all been digitized for researchers.

Over the past few months, we have also added alternative text to our photos on our website and social media whenever possible.

Dedication to doing better

Future Onsite Plans

The Montclair History Center is dedicated to being and doing better when it comes to accessibility. Plans to make the Nathaniel Crane House as well as the Clark House accessible for individuals living mobility disabilities are underway for 2023. Additionally upgrades to our gravel parking lot, driveway, and pathways to the gardens and farms are also in the planning phase. This project is made possible by the New Jersey Historic Trust.

Future online plans

As we get more and more of our collection digitized, we hope to get those collections online for researchers. We also strive to make more of our website accessible to individuals living with visual disabilities adding more alt text, making our links more clear, and improving the contrast ratio.
